She garnered critical acclaim for her roles in films several French films and such Hollywood fare as Big Fish, A Very Long Engagement (for which she received a César Award for Best Supporting Actress), A Good Year, Public Enemies, Nine, Inception, Midnight in Paris, and Contagion. Her comic book movie claim to fame is in the third of Chris Nolan's Batman movies The Dark Knight Rises.

Cotillard was born in Paris and grew up around Orléans, Loiret in an artistically inclined household. Her father is an actor/director, teacher and former mime. Cotillard's mother is also an actress and drama teacher. She has two younger twin brothers, Quentin and Guillaume.

On 19 April 2011, Cotillard was signed on to star in Christopher Nolan's film The Dark Knight Rises playing Miranda Tate, a board member at Wayne Enterprises that is also an ally of Bruce Wayne. Despite Cotillard claiming that her character is an original creation not from the comic books, a lot of evidence points to her being Talia al Ghul, daughter of Batman Begins villain Ra's al Ghul (Liam Neeson). The film opens on 20 July 2012.
